Slash vs Backslash: What’s the Difference?

The slash / and backslash \ are two different characters that slope in opposite directions. Their similar names make them easy to confuse, especially because both are common in computing and technical text.

The slash is U+002F SOLIDUS. The backslash is U+005C REVERSE SOLIDUS. They have separate Unicode identities and are not interchangeable.

Slash and Backslash at a Glance

SymbolCommon nameUnicode nameCode pointCommon contexts
/Slash / Forward slashSOLIDUSU+002FURLs, fractions, alternatives, dates, paths, and technical notation
\BackslashREVERSE SOLIDUSU+005CFile paths, escape sequences, programming, TeX, and technical notation

Although both are often grouped with punctuation symbols, their meaning depends heavily on the system or text in which they appear.

Which Way Does a Slash Point?

The slash is:

/

In ordinary left-to-right text, it runs from the lower left toward the upper right.

The backslash is:

\

It runs in the opposite direction, from the upper left toward the lower right.

The names forward slash and backslash are common in computing because they make the distinction easy to describe. The formal Unicode names are SOLIDUS and REVERSE SOLIDUS.

What Is the Slash /?

/ is U+002F SOLIDUS.

It is a general-purpose character with many uses. The surrounding context usually determines what it means.

It can separate alternatives:

and/or

It can appear in dates:

09/24/2026

It is also widely used in plain-text fractions and division-like notation:

3/4

12/3

And it has an important structural role in web addresses and many path-like syntaxes.

Why Do URLs Use /?

In URI syntax, a path can consist of multiple path segments separated by slash characters.

For example:

https://example.com/products/books/

Here, the slash separates parts of the hierarchical path.

A backslash \ is not the URI path separator defined for this purpose. Browsers may sometimes compensate for unusual input, but that does not make the two characters equivalent.

Why Is / Called a Forward Slash?

The name forward slash is widely used to distinguish / from \.

Unicode itself names U+002F SOLIDUS. In everyday writing and computing, however, slash and forward slash are both familiar names for the character.

The word forward is mainly useful when the direction needs to be made explicit.

What Is the Backslash \?

\ is U+005C REVERSE SOLIDUS, commonly called the backslash.

Unlike the ordinary slash, it is particularly associated with computing and technical notation.

Common uses include file paths, escape sequences, regular expressions, programming syntax, and command notation.

Backslash in File Paths

The backslash is strongly associated with Windows-style file paths.

For example:

C:\Users\Example\Documents

In this notation, backslashes separate directory names.

This creates a familiar contrast for many users: web addresses usually contain /, while Windows-style path notation commonly contains \.

Exact path rules still depend on the operating system, shell, programming API, and application, so the context should always be considered.

Backslash as an Escape Character

Many programming languages and text formats use a backslash to introduce an escape sequence.

For example:

\n

commonly represents a newline in languages and formats that use C-style escapes.

A sequence such as:

\”

may allow a quotation mark to appear inside a quoted string.

These meanings come from the syntax of the particular language or format. Unicode itself encodes the backslash character; it does not assign every programming meaning that software may give to it.

Backslash in TeX and LaTeX

TeX and LaTeX use a backslash to begin commands.

Examples include:

\alpha

\frac

\text

The backslash may therefore appear frequently in the source of a mathematical document even when it is not visible in the final rendered output.

Slash in Mathematics

The ordinary slash U+002F is often used in plain text to represent division or a fraction-like relationship:

a/b

Unicode also contains specialized slash-shaped mathematical characters.

SymbolUnicode nameCode point
/SOLIDUSU+002F
⁄FRACTION SLASHU+2044
∕DIVISION SLASHU+2215

These characters may look very similar, but Unicode treats them separately because they serve different roles.

Slash vs Fraction Slash ⁄

⁄ is U+2044 FRACTION SLASH.

Compare:

1/2

1⁄2

The first example contains the ordinary U+002F slash. The second contains U+2044 FRACTION SLASH.

The fraction slash is intended for fraction notation, while U+002F is a general-purpose punctuation character.

Slash vs Division Slash ∕

∕ is U+2215 DIVISION SLASH, a mathematical operator.

Compare:

/ — U+002F SOLIDUS

∕ — U+2215 DIVISION SLASH

In some fonts the two are extremely difficult to distinguish visually. Their Unicode identities, however, are different.

Backslash vs Set Minus ∖

Mathematics also contains characters that resemble a backslash.

Set difference may be written informally using a keyboard backslash:

A \ B

Unicode also provides the dedicated mathematical character:

∖ — U+2216 SET MINUS

SymbolNameCode point
\REVERSE SOLIDUSU+005C
∖SET MINUSU+2216

A keyboard backslash may be used as a practical substitute in plain text, but it is not the same Unicode character as the mathematical set-minus symbol.

Backslash vs Reverse Solidus Operator ⧵

Unicode contains another backslash-like mathematical character:

⧵ — U+29F5 REVERSE SOLIDUS OPERATOR

It is distinct from both the ordinary keyboard backslash and the set-minus symbol.

That gives us at least three related-looking characters:

  • \ — REVERSE SOLIDUS;
  • ∖ — SET MINUS;
  • ⧵ — REVERSE SOLIDUS OPERATOR.

Depending on the font, checking the code point may be the only reliable way to distinguish them.

Why / and \ Cannot Simply Be Swapped

In ordinary prose, reversing a slash may look like a simple typo. In machine-readable text, it can change the meaning or make the text invalid.

The distinction can matter in:

  • URIs and URLs;
  • file paths;
  • programming languages;
  • regular expressions;
  • command-line input;
  • TeX and LaTeX;
  • mathematical notation;
  • configuration files.

A computer does not treat the two characters as mirrored styles of the same symbol.

Other Slash-Like Characters

Copied text can contain characters that look like an ordinary slash but are actually different Unicode characters.

For example:

SymbolNameCode point
/SOLIDUSU+002F
⁄FRACTION SLASHU+2044
∕DIVISION SLASHU+2215
/FULLWIDTH SOLIDUSU+FF0F

Backslash-like characters have similar alternatives. This is why shape alone is not always enough for exact identification.

How to Tell Which Character You Have

Direction is the first clue:

/ — slash

\ — backslash

Next, look at the context. A separator in a normal web path is likely a slash. A character beginning a TeX command or an escape sequence is likely a backslash.

If the character comes from a mathematical formula or copied document, it may instead be a fraction slash, division slash, set minus, or another specialized symbol.

When appearance is not enough, paste the character into What Is This Symbol and inspect the actual character rather than guessing from its shape.

The Main Difference

/ and \ are separate Unicode characters with different common uses.

The slash is U+002F SOLIDUS. The backslash is U+005C REVERSE SOLIDUS.

They may often appear in similar technical environments, but one is not simply a mirrored spelling of the other.
